“Free to download” not “free for commercial use.“

Not “free to steal and upload to a website where they market the product and make money off of it even though they have a team of smiley makers who can’t seem to make original content.”

It should be known that that website is not the original source. From my very brief research (aka Google Reverse Image Search), http://qq.zol.com.cn/322/3226381.html is the oldest source (dated September 20, 2012) that contains those images. That website is apparently "the leading IT portal website in China, with 5 million+ registered users, 6 million+ daily unique visits, 41 million daily page views." Now, I don't know how copyrighting works, but the website is copyrighted (see bottom of page), for what it's worth.

This is an interesting case for xat.

Are people just realising this? I could find the last 150 powers on google reverse image search. Here’s a few:

Caterpillar:

http://www.sherv.net/sleepy.caterpillar-emoticon-5676.html

Arachnid:

http://www.sherv.net/hairy.spider-emoticon-3688.html

And so on.

This happen when you want a new power weekly.

Who is 'you'? I've never seen anyone use these new powers at all, they just seem like they're churning out powers just for the sake of random stuff.

Most of the new powers are useless or mindless  and people are forced to buy them if they want to keep the everypower.

That's the only reason why they buy them.

Way to be positive Mr Contributor!  :(  As Daniel said...this is nothing new.

xat needs to make weekly powers to continue to run a site.  That is just the way it is.

I don't think "unclothed" hippos of a different color, constitutes copyright.  Ideas always come from somewhere.

If this was a copyright then they should have included the name of creator of the original stuff or something!

To me these kind of stuff or any type of designs are not always 100% based on others' ideas, you can take ideas and put a twist on them, just don't fully rely on others' ideas to be exactly the same thing! it's pretty much not a big deal if you didn't imitate others' work like one hundred percent imitation!

You could find people who have been serving in the field of designing for years taking ideas of somewhere else and put more effort into them or make some changes or do something on your own you got the idea already! I think that's how it is.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. You're basically saying that if someone doesn't want their work stolen, they should do a better job to protect it. If person/entity A wants to use person/entity B's work, then they must get permission by the owner or through the license agreement.

At least in the US, copyright works such that an author's work is protected the moment it's created. Absolutely no documentation is required to claim ownership.

That's what I was talking about getting a permission from the owner, I wasn't just quite sure how it goes when you take ideas from someone else's work, maybe at least taking their name as the creators, doing your announcement publicly that you took ideas from someone else that's what I was thinking about at first, so that's pretty much it sir didn't know how it should have gone!

Wow, it wasn't until you made the GIFs that I realised that the OP is right, xat is stealing other peoples artwork.

Especially the (caterpillar), that is a blatant copy!

It is sad to see xat copying from other artists. While using someone's work as a reference or inspiration is fine, tracing it and using it for a commercial purpose (powers are paid) is just disappointing. Making smileys should require some hard work if you want them to be sold.
