Embed Image/Gif on HTML5 chat

It would be nice if images could be embed automatically in the chat without having to always link a certain image or screenshot. When an image is posted, it should be downsized so that the image doesn't take up the whole chat. When the image is clicked, it could open in a window on the chat with the full resolution of the image. When the image is clicked in the window, it leads to a tab with the image link etc. If adding text with the image, it should appear either above or below the set image.

As for animated images or gifs, having a built in gif searcher on the chat would be convenient. The gifs would work the same way as the images (downsized, able to click etc).

Would be nice to have, and perhaps have the ability to disable it for guest to use in official chats as an option if abuse of inappropriate material becomes a problem. 

 

EDIT: nvm, Cupim's suggestion is much better only allowing subscribers having the ability to do use this function.

For image embedding on main chat:
Not the 1st time that we see this concept but still, a good idea.

Although I think there should be an option for main owners: Toggle image  ON / OFF.

 

Image display ON == Prints the image

Image display OFF == will show the images as links instead of printing them (as it is right now)

Note: Default to all chats would be set OFF.

 

One of the issues with the concept is how much abuse could come from it.

Hence the idea of giving the option to the main owner, so they decide whether or not there's image embedding on their chat.

• If the hosting site is not white listed by xat, then the image wouldn't be printed.
• Make the feature to be subscriber or registered only (with the intent to reduce abuse)

For image embedding on Private Chats:

 

There could be a "global macro"...

This would allow any user to enable the image embedding feature on their Private Chat(s).

So regardless of the chat you're at, you could still use the feature with no harm to the main chat.

ON => Enables image embedding when reg/sub users send you images on Private Chat (links in .png, .jpg., .gif., .jpeg, etc.)

OFF => Shows the link (as it is right now)

We are talking about the HTML5 chat, and this is the type of user interface changes that users have been asking for. Macros are such an archaic method to set user preferences. There SHOULD be an area on the user interface for users to set their own preferences, where they are STORED. 

 

This would probably come with a GControl option "Who can send links in main chat?" where main owners would be able to choose whether or not guests/members/moderators/owners could send links - and effectively use this functionality. If users abuse this, it's not going to be different from using inappropriate pictures as avatars or posting inappropriate links IMO. May the moderators/owners/main owners handle it at their own discretion! It's also worth mentioning that not every chat is going to be as severe as officials, and that if a user does not like the idea of randomly stumbling into an inappropriate picture, they can disable it.

 

Making this a subscriber-only functionality is a no-go for me. Registered-only sounds fair as this would be an incentive for new users to register. Finally, I think this should be default enabled for everyone.

I tried this and it works in html5 and it looks pretty neat. I'll put the idea forward to admins and include all the points you guys added about the restrictions and options for owners/users.
