The bylaw, passed in 2008, lays out a number of general standards for the city’s property owners, including keeping grass and weeds below 20 cm in height, keeping the land free and clear of garbage, animal excrement, non-licensed vehicles or trailers, inoperable appliances, shopping carts, among other items, as well as ensuring hedges, trees and branches located on private property do not hinder pedestrian traffic.

Property owners are also responsible for maintaining walkways, driveways, parking spaces and steps on their property.

Residents who may face charges under Guelph’s yard maintenance bylaw will now receive a warning before the city takes action.

According to a report sent to councillors on Friday, a change is being made to the bylaw that will permit city staff to serve informal advance warnings to property owners that are not in compliance with the city’s yard maintenance bylaw.
