  1. I'd worry about scammers taking advantage, pretending to have items they don't actually have (i.e. trying to sell rented powers for off-site currency), and pretending to have a high value on their account in order to appear more reputable and trusted. I know there'd be a price for renting items, which should stop a lot of bad users, but these days it's still quite easy for anyone to win 1000 xats from contests/giveaways and other big events. Perhaps it should be for paid users only, to reduce the risk even more.

And I know it's the user's own fault if they're scammed this way, because they should always be checking to see if the seller's powers are rented or not, and xat doesn't support reselling for off-site currency, but it's something I have to bring up. If people can be fooled by volunteer / admin impersonators that look nothing like the real thing, I can imagine they'll probably be tricked by this too.

A way to reduce scams might be to have a 'preview mode' instead, where the user can try out any power for free in their own personal space, and other users wouldn't see them. This would still give users the taste they want and help them to make decisions before buying items.

Then again, the subscription service might be more beneficial for xat as opposed to a free one. And being able to try out EveryPower and other expensive items for free might kill the novelty of having them for the first time. Some users might actually be less inclined to buy the powers after testing them out, because it might not be as good as they thought it would be.

  2. I don't think we should give banned users more reasons to lurk on the chat instead of leaving. In most cases they've broken the chat rules and could make users feel uncomfortable, even with their fun name.

Nor do I think we should encourage staff to antagonize or embarrass banned users, because realistically that'll be the main selling point of the power and how it will be used in most cases, whether it's super limited or not, in my opinion.

Instead of rubbing salt into the wounds of banned users, and letting them rage, I think we should instead focus on de-escalating these situations and trying to avoid as much drama as possible.

I know it's just a fun power, but ultimately I think Nickban is a step too far.

  6. It sounds like a creative and more personal way to celebrate a user's birthday!

However, we must be careful when storing personal data from users, especially when the purpose is for cosmetics that only last one day a year (even if users consent to provide this information). We already have the party hat (hat#p) [as you have mentioned] and the Bd sticker power to celebrate such things.

  7. It can also give the misleading impression that the user was allowed to behave that way, or the staff were AFK and doing nothing to stop it.

I've been stung by this myself in the past. I muted someone instead of regular banning them, and it appeared as if I didn't ban them at all. It can cause confusion and bad feeling between staff.

For this reason, I fully agree to this being fixed / updated.

  8. What sorts of announcements would you like from the volunteers or admin?

We've had the suggestion to create a forum app a couple of times before (I'll leave the links here: [1] [2] [3] [4]). A common opinion is that the forum is already mobile-friendly with its responsive theme.

I don't think it's worth investing the time and resource into this when our current forum already works very well. But that's just my current opinion and some concept images might change that!

  9. It's not a solution to the problem, but I like to believe in karma.

It's the idea that good things happen to good people, and bad things happen to bad people. So if a person wants to spend their time trying to upset other people and trying to spoil their enjoyment of things, those actions may come back to haunt them - either in this life or a future one.

Personally, I wouldn't want something like that hanging over my head every day.

    Stricter banning

Stricter banning is already very useful in a lot of common cases, but as of lately, those using VPNs now, seem to have zero issue getting past the stricter banning functionality. And even if new users find themselves gagged, they will find very soon a new IP/ID, and eventually get past it (usually no issue on the 2nd attempt, from what I have observed). If this functionality has some way of being improved, it probably would be recommended as well, though I'm not sure how. It's already causing a lot of false positives among registered users, who seems to be gagged more often than unregistered users.

There was an old suggestion (not my own) to increase the length of stricter banning because it felt too short. I'm not sure if stricter banning is still a 15-minute gag, but this could potentially be extended to 15-60 minutes if a new setting is created on Gcontrol. The problem is that this may still catch some innocent users, however. And as Masha wrote, it feels like most of the time stricter banning isn't effective.

  10. If we're storing data about a user, would they be entitled to some form of it if they make a formal request for it?

There might also be a problem with needing to regularly maintain the notes so they remain accurate. In your example, Flake could later redeem himself but still be burdened by Lemona's note unless she remembers to delete her old note or add a new one. It could be a problem if staff don't keep on top of them, although I appreciate you've said they could automatically expire after a certain period, which could mitigate the problem.

  11. We also have the Hush power, which allows main owners and owners to gag all users of a certain rank (e.g. guests) at once for any time between 10-60 seconds. Gag means to stop a user from talking in the main chat.

I guess your idea is to have something like Hush but functioning automatically when guests sign into the chat, and perhaps it could differentiate being registered and unregistered users too.

If so, I think it could be very useful for dealing with raid bots before they're able to post and disrupt the chat. You'd see the raid bots silently filling up the visitor list, all of them gagged, and you'd be able to deal with them in good time before the chat is flooded (e.g. with protect mode and kickall), not while it's being flooded when panic can set in. This would help prevent other visitors from seeing whatever attention-seeking messages the raid bots were going to write.

There are drawbacks with all things, however, and as Solange wrote it could be annoying in some situations having to wait 60 seconds each time you sign in before you're able to type in the main chat. But some users might prefer that to the captcha.
